Achievements, friends lists, leaderboards, and other gaming furniture are indispensible on a gaming machine these days, and the iPhone is more than usually well supplied with them. Where the Xbox just has Xbox Live and the PlayStation just has PSN, the iPhone has OpenFeint, Plus+, Crystal, and Scoreloop, to name a few.

Apple announced its own social gaming solution back in April when it briefed the world on the miracle of iOS 4. So far, the much anticipated Game Center has failed to appear, but there are indications that it could be with us soon.

According to a report by 9to5mac, Apple has informed iOS developers that they can now start creating content for Game Center.

The message from Apple reads: "You can now set up metadata for your Game Center Achievements and Leaderboard Categories in iTunes Connect. Setting up these elements will allow you to test the full capabilities of Game Center for your app in the sandbox environment."

While this doesn't constitute confirmation that Game Center is nearly upon us, chances are we'll be seeing it before the end of September, when Apple tends to hold a keynote to unveil new iPod touch hardware.
