Game Center no longer supported on iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G?

Most recent developers build hints at further fragmentation to come

Game Center no longer supported on iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G?

Back when Apple first announced Game Center to the enraptured crowd at the iOS 4 event in April, it said that the Xbox-Live/OpenFeint/Plus+-esque social gaming system would be available for iOS 4.

A lot of people, including ourselves, presumed this meant every device with iOS 4 would be getting the new service.

However, a screenshot of the most recent developers' build for iOS 4.1 taken by 9to5 Mac suggests that this may no longer be the case, as it contains a new line in the GameKit description stating plainly that ‘Game Centre is no longer supported on iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch’.

If true, it might be the first sign that Apple is looking to wind down support for the older models, and risks fragmenting the new service when it finally appears on consumer’s devices later this year.

Have an iPhone 3G or second-generation iPod touch? Then we’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter in the comments thread below.
