Samsung has launched its highly anticipated Galaxy S - the Korean mega-corporation’s third Android-powered handset -in Europe.

The Galaxy S will roll out across more than 100 operators simultaneously, a hugely ambitious launch plan aimed at propelling Samsung to the front of the high-end Android queue ahead of HTC and Motorola.

Samsung's latest handset (which will run on Android 2.1 to start with) certainly boasts the specs to match the company’s ambitions, featuring a high quality 4-inch Super AMOLED screen powered by a 1GHz processor. It will follow Samsung’s Wave handset in having DivX certification for its 720p HD video output capabilities.

“The Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S will set a new standard for smartphones, and the excitement we’ve seen from operators and retailers for this device is testament to that,” said JK Shin, president and head of the Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

The Galaxy S was previously revealed as a Vodafone exclusive in the UK, but the operator still only has the handset listed as Coming Soon.
