Last night a stranger rode into town with an arrow in his back. As he slumped in the saloon (he wasn't dead, he'd just downed one too many mescaline tequilas) we rifled through his satchel bag and uncovered news, new multiplayer screens (right) and a trailer (click 'Watch It!' to download it) of GUN Showdown.

Well, it's more exciting than the reality, which involves email, a press release, and coffee.

For those new to the frontier, GUN Showdown is a free roaming action-adventure that sees you shooting, knifing and dynamiting your way across the Wild West on the trail of corrupt lawmen, outlaws and dodgy preachers.

On your path through a plot written by Hollywood scriptwriter Randall Jahnson (who penned Mask of Zorro, semi-appropriately), you'll fight on horseback, collect bounties and takeover and wreck trains. An element of roleplaying will also see you unlock new weapons, and upgrade skills like horse riding and gunslinging.

Already out on the consoles, the PSP version features several new Quick-Play modes (including a version of Texas Hold'em poker) and extra gameplay features, as well as five new missions and new weapons such as mines and throwing knives.

Both co-operative and competitive wi-fi modes are also in the mix, led by a head-to-head Showdown mode, which will offer Deathmatch, Golden Cross and Last Man Standing options.

GUN Showdown will be waiting for you some High Noon towards the end of 2006.
