Sony's WipEout hasn't come to the iPhone (yet), but fans of futuristic racing already have a number of similar titles to choose from, including Low Grav Racer, Snail Mail and Vektrax.

Soon, you can add another to that list: Speed Racer. It's the work of Assyria Game Studios, a fledgling developer set up by a group of UK-based students.

The game is due out in March this year, and you can see working screenshots above. "The game has been in development for around two months so far, in and around university deadlines," Assyria co-founder Adam Green tells PocketGamer.biz.

"The game is obviously heavily inspired by the WipEout series; I have been a long time fan of the WipEout games and I thought the iPhone's input would suit the style of gameplay very well."

Adam is definitely committed - he's spent £2,000 of his own savings to buy the technology required to develop the game. Once he and his colleagues complete their courses, he says they hope to work on other iPhone titles, as well as WiiWare.

We suspect the first game's name may change though, given the fact that Speed Racer was the name of a Hollywood movie last year, and its spin-off mobile game.
