Though the credit crunch might sound like a sort of tasty breakfast cereal (mmmmmm sugar coated oat pound signs), it's actually the current buzz term du jour for global economic meltdown.

So, while we're not eating boiled leather and roadkill quite yet, it might not be such a bad idea to tighten those purse strings a little bit. But where does that leave your chronic pocket gaming addiction? In our very capable freebie-giving hands, of course.

First to the table this week is a new PSP demo from the PSP Demo Centre and before you go getting all excited: yes, it's in Japanese and no, it's not much use if you don't speak the language. The game in question is the sequel to Everybody Reading and is called Dokusho 2.

A bit of a poor showing we'll admit, but never fear - there's something for another niche group to enjoy on the PSP too. Mac and Linux users have long been suffering out in the bitter cold where the PSP Store is concerned, but now that Sony has seen fit to get with this century and make the PSP Store and all of its content accessible to the PSP directly, you need no longer tether your device to a Windows PC to get hold of all the latest demos.

In the 'settings' menu hit Software Update and follow the simple instructions to install firmware version 5.0 on your device and all manner of free PSP goodies will be yours to access.

Moving on to the DS, since we last checked, there has been a demo of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney added so you can live out all of your courtroom fantasies (not those ones you mucky pups). It might seem like quite a late addition seeing as the game was released a good long while back, but don't let that put you off. If you haven't been acquainted with the charms of touchscreen courtroom drama, this is as good a place as any to start.

On mobile this week we have a demo of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, which of course is housed in the sanctity of our Demos section. It's way too grey and wet for a kick-about in the real world at this time of year, so this is especially worth a look. Did I mention that it's an absolutely fantastic footie game to boot (to boot - honestly, sometimes I even surprise myself).

And that, dear friends, should be enough to keep your cash in your wallet for another week of financial worry. If however you need even more of a pocket gaming fix, the Freebie Archive is officially where it's at. Don't forget to click 'Track It!' to be sure not to miss next week's handheld gaming plunder.
