Usually free things are mostly confined to certain members of the Windsor family, criminals and E3 attendees, but every Friday we do what we can to add you, our esteemed readers, to that exclusive list, if only for a short while.

Without wasting another moment, then, let's dive into this week's barrel of costless handheld gaming spoils.

We have ranted and raved about the fantasy author Darren Reid on Pocket Gamer many times before, so we're excited to find his most ambitious project to date, The Half Broken Crown, is finally ready to play.

So far, the browser-based MMORPG is only available on PSP, but a DS version is in the works and will hopefully arrive soon. We should point out it's not really one for seasoned orcs looking to do battle with hardened ultramarines, though, as there is no combat in the game. There is, however, plenty of interaction and puzzling to be had, not to mention a heavy narrative to sink your teeth into.

Not all of the game is free but the central hub world and a couple of mini-quests are available as tasters, providing a decent couple of hours' worth of play.

The DS, meanwhile, has a hearty homebrew offering this week in the form of the latest version of PuzzleManiak. The package, unsurprisingly, features a bevy of puzzle games (11 in total), including the excitingly titled Pattern (essentially a Picross clone), Sudoku and Untangle. All are free but do require you to know your way around a basic DS homebrew set-up – a good thing we posted a how to on the subject a while back, then.

As for mobiles this week, we've uncovered another free game site, called Mobikade. In order to get at any of the titles you will need to register, which is free but does require you to supply your mobile number. There are plenty of free content on offer, though, including Coin Football, which from the title seems an inspired idea for a mobile game.

Right, that's your lot for this week. Once you're done, it'll be time to go back to paying for things for another seven days. But should you find that you just can't hold out until then, you could always comb through our freebie archive for any gems you might have overlooked.
