It's officially spring time! Well, at least it will be by Monday, which means that us pocket gamers have just enough indoor languishing time left to load up our portable gaming trinkets with free stuff before being obliged to disappear into the great outdoors for some much-needed sunshine (mobile devices in tow, of course).

Gamejump continues to be a bottomless pit of high-ranking free mobile games, and there have recently been some noteworthy additions to its cannon of titles.

A top 20 finalist at last year's iMG Awards, Heli-Rescue is a pseudo-3D game that is all about, well, the title says it all really. But don't let the simplicity of saving stranded humans with a helicopter put you off – as well as eliciting an enormous sense of do-gooder self satisfaction from the player, the game (which as always is available in full, with ads) is also great fun and well worth a download.

Also joining the party is Slider Kids, another cheerful addition to the happy-go-lucky OneThumb lineup from OrangePixel. Basically you slide one of an assortment of plucky young sliding scamps down a big hill, jumping to avoid obstacles as you go and performing the odd trick to boost your score. Again disarmingly simple, stylishly executed and free, what more could a mobile gamer ask for?

Elsewhere, the PSP got a new demo this week, and thankfully it's not another level from LocoRoco. Not that we don't love the little yellow globule and his plentiful demos, but DJ Max Portable 2 is not the sort of thing the PSP has much of, which makes its appearance all the more welcome.

DJ Max 2 is a style-conscious rhythm action title with an emphasis on the banging urban beats that hip kids are so fond of these days. The only snag is that it's not a mod-friendly file, and those who've not already upgraded their firmware will have to make the jump before the demo will run.
