Turns out - shock horror - people love free stuff. So when FreeAppADay offered up the chance to grab completely free apps and games for iPhone and iPod touch though an official app, gamers jumped at it in record numbers.

The free app, which highlights recently discounted downloads and even lets users leave a “wish” for a particular game to go free, has had more than 800,000 downloads in five days.

The gold version of the app (also free) supports push notifications, so your device will chirp like a bird when a new game is available for nothing.

FreeAppADay’s biggest story so far has beenCivilisation Revolution, which went free over the weekend. With a mix of the website, official app, sites like Pocket Gamer and social networking sites, it rocketed up the app charts.
