Freaky Creatures announced... again

We were about to write a big story about the announcement of Freaky Creatures, an exciting new cross-platform game from Abandon Interactive Entertainment.

But it sounded familiar, so we combed our archives and found… an announcement for Freaky Creatures from March this year. Maybe no-one noticed the first time around.

They should have done, though, because it sounds interesting. It's a cross between a virtual world and a multiplayer mobile game, with a line of real-world toys thrown in for good measure.

Launching next spring, it'll be aimed at 'tweenagers' (i.e. eight to 13-year-olds). The idea is they'll buy a Freaky Creature monster toy and then use a virtual version to battle against other players' monsters via PC and mobile phone.

There'll also be virtual pet elements, in the way you raise, train and play with your creature, as well as an online community comprising comics, character blogs, competitions, chatrooms and clans.

"Freaky Creatures is not about cute, cuddly characters," says Abandon's president Jamie Ottilie. "Instead it's about players creating their own unique creature using more than a billion combinations of creature parts and powers, and taking them online to kick some tail."

The company is taking sign-ups now via its website. We'll be keeping track of Freaky Creatures leading up to its launch, as well as keeping tabs on the emerging crossover between mobile gaming and teen-focused virtual worlds.
