EA Sports has said that the 3DS version of forthcoming football title FIFA 12 will not feature online multiplayer.

In an interview with Nintendo World Report, the game’s producer Matt Prior admitted: “currently, we only have local head-to-head play, but server-based online is certainly something we would be looking at in the future.”

No doubt this is disappointing news for 3DS owners, particularly given that it contradicts the game’s first press release issued last week.

The original blurb trumpeted an extensive array of modes, one of which was 'head-to-head online matches using Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.'

Prior also confirmed that the game would not use the console’s StreetPass or SpotPass functionality, though Nintendo World Report noted that he was optimistic such features would be present in future iterations.

Despite the lack of online play, FIFA 12 still promises 'the largest feature set ever developed by EA Sports for a handheld soccer game,' including optional touchscreen controls and a fully-fledged Street mode with a brand new camera perspective to enhance the 3D image.

FIFA 12 is due to kick off on 3DS this autumn.
