Whistle while you work

Extreme Sheepdog Trials flocks to iPhone and iPad

UK telly classic One Man and His Dog may be off the TV right now, but if you ever sat there and thought, “Hmmm, that looks a doddle – I might just head to Yorkshire and become one of those shepherds next Tuesday,” now’s your chance.

Extreme Sheepdog Trials, from Cambridge-based outfit Green Custard, hands the sheepdog’s reins over to you for 15 levels of herding mayhem across three themed zones.

While the Traditional and Round The World modes are self-explanatory, the Space Zone requires you to guide your flock of sheep against a backdrop of lasers, robots, acid and switches.

Whistle down the wind

It gets better though, as the clever bods at Green Custard have implemented a novel way of controlling your aforementioned herding dog: yep, you’ve guessed it, whistling!

By whistling carefully into the iPhone’s mic, you are able to mimic real-life sheepdog commands.

With some clever tech eliminating any background noise, you are free to control your herd anywhere and everywhere.

Once you’ve mastered the vagaries of herding and flock behaviours, post your high scores to Facebook and compare your personal best to other shepherds on a worldwide leader board.

Don’t worry, by the way, if, like me, you can’t whistle a note, let alone Wind of Change by The Scorpions. Wannabe sheepdog handlers can also utilise regular touchscreen controls on the iPhone and iPad.

Extreme Sheep Trials is out now on the App Store. The iPhone version is priced at $1.99 / £1.19 / €1.59, while the HD iPad edition will set you back $2.99 / £1.79 / €2.39.
