iPhone going manga with Rebuild of Evangelion

Okay, so this isn’t massively gamey (although it could yet become quite gamey in the not-too-distant near future present past), but it got the Japano-phile in us quite excited and seemed like a great chill out story for Friday afternoon.

Japanese mobile applications developer Appliya has obtained the licence to bring the super-awesome manga and anime series, Rebuild of Evangelion, to the iPhone. Initially the license will be used to produce themed applications – most likely for wallpapers, series info, episode listings, Evangelion news, and so forth – but will hopefully turn toward the official game we’d love to see.

For those unfamiliar with the Rebuild of Evangelion franchise, it’s essentially a four film re-imagining of the classic manga series Neon Genesis Evangelion; a firm favourite with anime fans since its release in 1995, and is one of those hot properties whose games and merchandise have rarely left its native shores.

The first of the four new movies has been released in Japan, though it’s unclear when the West might get to see them. Late 2009 seems to be the earliest. So hopefully this iPhone licence of Rebuild of Evangelion will herald the beginning of its dissemination into Western entertainment. Watch this space.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
