Utah-based developer Eat Play Sleep has announced it is jumping ship to iOS development following news of layoffs and the impending departure of outspoken co-founder David Jaffe.

The team, which is currently putting the final touches on carnage racer Twisted Metal for the PS3, will now shift its focus to developing for iPhone and iPad.

The company's other co-founder, Scott Campbell, spoke with The Salt Lake Tribune confirming the news and explaining why the former console developer was making the jump to mobile gaming after five years of developing for consoles.

"It's a platform that is in our pockets almost 24/7. It's kind of the size and types of games we're playing.

"You can certainly reach a lot more people. That's pretty exciting for us."

Meanwhile, David Jaffe, whose popular works include the God of War series, announced on Twitter that he would be leaving the company to open a new studio shortly after the release of the imminent Twisted Metal title.

Despite rumours to the contrary, Jaffe took to Twitter to debunk claims he was also joining the move into mobile, stating that he had "zero plans to make games like FARMVILLE and ANGRY BIRDS".

He later clarified that an iOS game isn't completely out of the question, however: "I have no idea what game we'll make yet. Could be iphone, could be next gen console."
