Somewhere in this story, there's a pun about chopping a worm in half with a shovelware (shovel, see? Like when you're digging in the garden) but I can't think of it so instead I'll just report that Interplay is taking advantage of its current financial liquidity following the $5.75m (£2.89m) sale of the Fallout licence to Bethesda to resurrect the Earthworm Jim licence.

Interplay has approached the series creator, Doug TenNapel, who will come on board as a creative director for Earthworm Jim 4, as well as for a cartoon series and movie.

The game will appear on Nintendo's Virtual Console first, as a means of financing its wider propagation, and while Interplay has so far failed to announce what platforms the forthcoming videogame will appear on I'm betting DS and mobile, given the relatively low production costs.

A PSP version was also planned and then cancelled last year (hence the screenshots above) so you can probably assume that work will be revisited. Click 'Track It! To follow the story.
