SNES shooter Earth Defense Force comes to iPhone
The best defence...
Paris-based publisher DotEmu has resurrected the classic SNES shooter Earth Defense Force for iPhone.
First developed by Jaleco Ltd way back in 1991, Earth Defense Force is a traditional horizontal shooter in the vein of games like R-Type.
The game straps you into an experimental space fighter as you attempt to destroy the Orbital Buster, a Death Star-esque weapon constructed with the intention of blowing us all to bits.
Naturally, doing so requires you to clear six side-scrolling warzones, collect an arsenal of rapid firing power-ups, and bring down a crew of screen-filling mechanical bosses.
This shiny new iPhone version, while packing the same retro graphics and sound as the original, offers some nice modern touches too. There's Game Center integration for sharing high scores, the option to use touch control or a virtual D-pad, and the ability to import your own music.
Personally, though, it seems criminal to ignore the 16-bit J-Fusion genius of the original soundtrack.
Check out the video trailer below, and you'll see what I mean.
Earth Defense Force is out on the App Store now for an introductory price of £1.19 / $1.99 / €1.59.
