Summer time last year and publisher Playlogic was announcing it had bought up the rights to make a game based on the French cartoon series Dragon Hunters, which was also all set to get an animated 3D film release this year. Now the company has confirmed the game will be released for DS next month, in April.

The cartoon series, in case you're not aware of it, follows the adventures of two dragon hunters-for-hire, Lian-Chu and Gwizdo, and also their pet dragon, er, Hector. The game is based on both the cartoons and the upcoming film and takes the form of an action-platformer with you alternating play between each of the protagonists.

Would you believe it, each character has their own special skills and these are used to overcome obstacles, solve puzzles and defeat a variety of enemies. So far, so average sounding, but Dragon Hunters does contain a bit of a twist: its gravity defying levels allow you to walk on the walls and even ceilings of each twisty, maze-like level.

There are also 3D boss battles with giant beings that span both the DS screens, and other breaks from the platforming action in the form of multiplayer mini-games.

Whether this is all enough to stand out from the crowd we'll have to see upon its release next month. Playlogic also reminds us it has the exclusive worldwide game licence to produce Dragon Hunters titles for five years - so this might be the first but it almost certainly isn't the last.
