It might have been a little surprising to find that one of the most popular iPhone games of all time, one with 3.5 million sales no less, hasn't yet been given the high resolution treatment and slapped onto iTunes with an 'HD' or 'XL' label for iPad.

But Igor and Marko Pusenjak, founders of Lima Sky and creators of Doodle Jump, wanted to get their hands on the iPad before porting the bouncy creature to Apple's latest device.

“We wanted to wait until we had it in hand so we could see the game mechanics in action and make sure they worked perfectly,” Igor Pusenjak told the New York Times.

The original plan of Igor showing the iPad over a video chat to his brother Marko in Croatia abruptly changed once Apple opened the floodgates and unleashed the 3,000-odd iPad apps onto iTunes. “Once we saw how many apps were already available for the iPad, we realized we needed to jump on it right away,” said Igor.

Marko arrived in New York, the brothers worked on designs for a new version of Doodle Jump, and then lined up with all the other Apple fans the next morning to buy the new tablet.

They quickly found that what worked on the iPad simulator (the only way that developers could see most pre-release games), didn't always translate onto the device itself. BubbleWrap, one of Lima Sky's first iPhone games, had already been ported to iPad but the brothers found plenty of graphical glitches and bugs.

"If anything, the brothers said, the problems were an additional validation that they had made the right move to wait, rather than submit Doodle Jump early" wrote the New York Times.

BubbleWrap, with all technical worries fixed, is now available on iPad for 99c or 59p. It's Lima Sky's first iPad game, but definitely not the last.
