Microsoft's original DOS game Donkey.bas speeds onto iPhone and iPad

If you're old enough to remember a time when Duran Duran ruled the charts and mobile phones ran on steam turbines, you might recall a game called Donkey.bas.

Bundled with the original PC-DOS operating system and co-written by none other than Bill Gates himself, Donkey.bas was Microsoft's first commercial game release.

Created to showcase the potential of the BASIC programming language, this innocuous, crude little racer brought us one step closer to the fully interactive 3D experiences Xbox owners enjoy today.

Lo and behold, iPhone and iPad owners can now own a piece of gaming history by downloading Donkey.bas from the App Store.

It's a simple game of man versus beast. You drive down a straight road, switching lanes to avoid inconveniently placed donkeys, thus preventing your sexy 8-bit sports car from exploding in a shower of pixels. Just like driving to Tesco, really.
