E3 2008: Digimon World Championship digivoles on your digi-DS

New hunting, tactical breeding and title matches come to the Digimon gaming franchise

E3 2008: Digimon World Championship digivoles on your digi-DS

Digi-this and digi-that. Those Japanese really know how to sell toys to kids in the most baffling way. And it undoubtedly speaks volumes about the levels of maturity around the Pocket Gamer offices, as Digimon's become something of a guilty pleasure.

Guilty, in so much as we tend to squirm a little more at the rather brutal, dog-fighting cage matches that underlie the concept, while the Japanese can more easily accept any kind of imaginary violence in the harmless, entertaining way it's meant to be taken.

Anyway, this latest incarnation of the animal hunting, training and fighting game promises to blend the franchise with something of a cyber-pet lilt; affecting the way your digimon behave depending on your training methods.

The Digimon World Championship also takes place in a much bigger world than previously seen, and allows 'tamers' to pit their 'digivolved' digimon against each other over digi-ad-hoc or Nintendo digi-Wi-Fi digi-Connection.

Not an easy digi-concept to fully absorb, if your digi-kids are already immersed in the perplexing world of Digimon, they're more than likely to find Digimon World Championship to be quite the cock-fighting digi-hoot. Just don't try to bend your mind around it or something's likely to snap.

Check out the latest screenshots above, just in time for the game's imminent US release. And there's also our previous hands-on digi-experience of Digimon World Championship.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
