DemoGenerator aims to make trials less of a trial

Turns any Java game into a try-before-you-buy preview

There's been a lot of talk about mobile game trials in recent months, with publishers and operators alike seeing them as a good way to tempt people who don't want to risk £5 on a mobile game without playing it.

Most big publishers have the ability to create demo versions of their games now, either as downloads that encourage you to upgrade to the full version, or as emulator demos for the Web. But what about smaller firms?

JoyBits reckons it has the answer, with its new technology called DemoGenerator. It claims to let developers make demo versions of their games in a matter of minutes, simply by feeding in their .jar and .jad files.

They get to set a time limit on how long users can play the game, before they have to click through to buy the full version, via Premium SMS, or via a link.

It's an intriguing idea, but we'll have to wait and see whether it catches on. If it works effectively, and the result is a lot more demos available for mobile gamers to try, that's good news.
