Publisher Ghostlight has announced Decathletes is being developed by The Code Monkeys for a spring 2008 release on both major handheld formats.

The game obviously features ten varied events and, ambitiously, aims to recapture the hugely competitive and compelling thrill of some classic titles. "Our goal is to create a highly realistic athletics simulator whilst maintaining a compelling pick-up-and-play game style akin to titles such as Track & Field and Daley Thompson's Decathlon," said Adrian Hirst, development director at Code Monkeys, while stretching his calf muscles.

As its renowned predecessors, the full potential of the Decathletes experience is only likely to be unlocked when engaging in multiplayer encounters. As such, both versions offer four-player head-to-head support, as well as an obligatory solo option for friendless individuals.

Career mode aims to add a little extra substance to the competition, rewarding players for winning events by unlocking stadia and bonus challenges, while a comprehensive character customisation system is also promised.

As huge fans of the aforementioned classic athletics games, expect us to keep tracking this closely and bring you progress reports before the game's release, presumably set to coincide with the hype surrounding next year's Beijing Olympics (something we're hoping will not prove a deciding factor in rushing the game out before it is ready for competition).
