If you were addicted arcade creeper back in the '80s, like me, then you'll remember Taito's beast of a coin-op cabinet, Darius. This megalithic coin guzzler had three monitors inside, giving it extra widescreen graphics for the decent amount shmup action and extra big boss battles.

Anyway, Darius rears its head again every so often, with the latest instalment just getting a Japanese release date and official trailer. Darius Burst appears to be something of a series reboot rather than an obscure sequel (judging by the recognisable bosses seen in the trailer), which is no bad thing.

The PSP handles this kind of retro shooter beautifully, and it's widescreen display should help take the game back to its monstrous arcade roots. Darius Burst is due for release on December 24th in Japan, on both UMD and digital download as far as we can tell.

There's no news on a worldwide release date yet (in fact, there's no news that a worldwide release is even planned, though it's hard to imagine a Japan-only release on a game like this), but the trailer below as gutters pretty damn excited about the prospect of Darius Burst on our PSPs in the new year.

Come on Taito. Don't leave us hanging.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
