There hasn't been a great Micro Machines topdown racer since... well the original Micro Machines, and while Cobra Mobile's Danger Derby isn't exactly the same sort of game, it certainly offers similar thrills.

Released just for iPad, and including a neat two player on-device multiplayer option, it's what Cobra calls a Race and Chase game, that has you zooming around eight different curvy tracks against three other cars.

There are three main modes - Arcade, Challenge and Freeplay - plus an unlockable Mirror mode, which mirrors the tracks.

All the way to the flag

Obviously the goal is to race and win.

You have to be placed in the top three to unlock the track progression, and you'll also earn upgrade points so you can improve the speed, acceleration and handling of your vehicle as you go.

Neatly, the Freeplay option works a practice mode as you can set the number of laps and opponents you want to race against. It's important as you really have to work out the best moves and lines to take as track complexity increases due to speediness and the slideyness of the car's handling.

Of course, everything is presented with Cobra's usual spit and polish, including an option to create a playlist from your iPad's music, and trophies to unlock.

Danger Derby is out now, only for iPad, priced $4.99, €3.99 or £2.99.
