In an effort to remind hardware spenders that the PSP's not entirely dead yet, Sony's director of hardware marketing has stepped up to offer a bit of smack talk about the viability of the recently launched DSi.

"If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the 'kids' market that they've always engaged, there isn't much new with the DSi to support that," is Koller's completely unbiased opinion on the new Nintendo hardware update.

"Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics."

He goes on to drop the names of half a dozen new PSP titles due for launch this year (we must confess to being quite excited about a couple of them) though doesn't quite get around to explaining how Sony is catering for the demographics Nintendo is ignoring.

Clearly we don't expect Sony to big up the DSi at all, but it grates on the nerves of dedicated gamers to hear PR professionals resorting to denigrating the competition in lieu of expressing faith in their own products.

That's what politicians do when they come out of the woodwork at election time. Nintendo's as guilty as anyone, of course.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
