Nintendo reveals new DSi: DSi LL

Rumours true, 4.2-inch displays confirmed

Product: DSi XL | Manufacturer: Nintendo
Like the rest of the internet, we heard the sudden and bizarre rumour that Nintendo was planning a large screen DSi for imminent release, and were just a little bit saddened to hear that it had been officially denied.

Low and behold, Nintendo then goes and performs a trademark about-turn and reveals the DSi LL – a large screen DSi unit.

These new screens will measure a whopping 4.2 inches (compared to the 3.25-inch screens of the DSi), increasing the overall size of the unit quite substantially. It'll also be accompanied by a pen-sized stylus (in addition to a normal-sized model), presumably to make it easier to cover the greater distance of that massive touchscreen.

Not only has this new device crept up on us, but it's even due for imminent release in Japan on November 21st at ¥20,000, which currently works out at wallet friendly £134 (although don't expect a direct conversion when the western price is announced), and will come pre-loaded with DSiWare titles A Bit of Brain Training: Arts, A Bit of Brain Training: Science and Kiyou Akira Rakuhiku Language Easier.

As gorgeous as the DSi LL is (particularly in that deep metallic red - Wine Red, to be exact, with Dark Brown and Natural White also planned) we do have to wonder about the marketing minds at Nintendo. Seeing the DSi LL on the horizon will almost certainly crucify the current DSi, and will undoubtedly rile up anyone who just shelled out for the old (yes, the very young DSi is now old) model.

Have a look at the first products shots below, and this rather convenient device comparison on the official Nintendo DSi LL page, and tell us what you think.

No word yet on a European or North American release.

My god, that looks like a beast. Glad I went with the PSP Go (nice and small).

Unless this comes with a spec bump that makes it a more competent media machine, actually has some new exclusive games, a longer battery life or makes my DS games look better, it won't be worth the price of an upgrade. My DS Lite is currently unimpressed, if a little perplexed.

I'm one of those who didn't buy a DSi, so it's great for me.

An optional reimbursement/upgrade from Nintendo would be nice, like how early Xbox owners were compensated for the big price drop (two games and a controller were offered).
