Konami invokes global duelling for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Spirit Caller

Monster duelling game gets spectral help and full Internet support

Konami invokes global duelling for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Spirit Caller

Now we're no English teachers, but doesn't Japanese fighting game series Yu-Gi-Oh! contain too many vowels? It sounds like the sort of thing we'd imagine a Japanese person saying if they dropped their toast butterside down - at least if Japanese people ate toast, which is something we can't quite imagine.

It's the addition of two magic consonants – DX – that will have fans of the duelling monster anime/game interested however, as this denotes the first DS game in the spin-out franchise of the series, which concerns the goings on within the Duel Academy – a sort of Hogwarts for the Yu-Gi-Oh! generation.

For that reason, the backplot of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Spirit Caller, sees you enter said academy, where you're allocated a room in the Obelisk Dormitory. There you'll meet various spectral forms – spirits no less – who will help you with handy advice as you try to fight your way through the school to become a master duelist.

And building on the series' first DS game – Nightmare Troubadour – Konami promises that Spirit Caller will showcase a much improved duelling system, which will be faster and more intuitive to control with stylus and touchscreen.

A more significant feature though is support for Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service, which will let you fight against any other online players around the world in one-on-one bouts. Linked to this will be a new character creation system that will enable you to create an onscreen persona that will provide an individual focus to your global ambitions.

Still completing 100,000 lines for failing its spelling test, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Spirit Caller is due for a spring release.
