The Great Giana Sisters finally set free for DS

Super Mario Bros. clone to return after 20 years (hopefully)

The Great Giana Sisters finally set free for DS

Joystiq is reporting that the fabled Super Mario Bros clone for the 8 and 16-bit computers of yore Great Giana Sisters is finally being set free from the dungeon Nintendo locked it in back in 1987.

To be fair, it was a total rip-off of Super Mario Bros, but since home computer gamers of the day didn't have any option for playing Mario's seminal game, it's understandable why Great Giana Sisters came into being. But Nintendo would have none of it, and the game was subsequently put to pasture save for a mobile version in 2006.

According to the report, German publisher DTP Entertainment is working with Spellbound Entertainment and Bitfield to bring the sisters back to the Nintendo DS, of all consoles.

Apparently it's going to make use of the touchscreen and microphone, but quite how hasn't yet been revealed. As gamers, we're not especially concerned about IP ownership (we can understand why Nintendo and buddies might be, of course) and Great Giana Sisters is fondly remembered as a platform game, so let's hope no new legal shenanigans crop up to thwart them a second time.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
