Upcoming CGI film Space Chimps features a circus chimp called Ham who is chosen to head up a mission into space to explore a new planet. Once there, Ham finds the planet is ruled by a tyrannical leader and must help save his monkey colleagues from danger.

Exciting, non? But even better than the film (which is being directed by John 'Shrek 2' Williams and Barry 'Men in Black' Sonnenfeld) is today's news that developer Brash Entertainment has snapped up the game rights for DS (as well as PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii).

It's early days in terms of details, but the game will apparently offer a unique storyline which follows the adventures of Ham and friend Luna as they explore the alien planet in search of Earth's lost Infinity Space Probe.

The film is down for a July 2008 release, so we should normally expect to see the game at around the same time. That said, let's hope Brash has been working on it for a while as you can't normally develop a decent DS game in seven months.

We'll have more on Space Chimps before then, obviously.

(On a related note, Brash Entertainment also recently announced it would be making a game based on the brilliantly sick horror film Saw. The formats this game will be made for are yet to be confirmed beyond home consoles but despite the fact setting gory and elaborate traps to kill people could probably translate well onto DS, we're guessing it might not appeal to the majority of the handheld's demographic. Perhaps a PSP version is more likely.)
