The infamous R4 DS cartridge, which allows DS owners to play illegally downloaded games on their systems, has been officially outlawed here in the UK.

The London High Court ruled that importation, advertising, and sales of game copying devices are now considered illegal in the UK. Playables Limited’s assertion that game copiers are lawful, as they allow for the play of 'homebrew' applications, fell on deaf ears.

Nintendo has welcomed the decision, stating that the company “promotes and fosters game development and creativity, and strongly supports the game developers who legitimately create new and innovative applications.”

It added that “Nintendo initiates these actions not only on its own behalf, but also on behalf of over 1,400 video game-development companies that depend on legitimate sales of games for their survival.”

The ruling follows hot on the heels of a decision made earlier this month in the Netherlands, where a court ruled against 11 Dutch online retailers for selling game copier devices.
