Japanese magazines battle to claim imminent reveal

New Pokemon game set to be unveiled within next month

There’s a new Pokemon game on the way, and - depending on who you believe - we’ll know what it is on either May 21st or June 15th.

Official Nintendo Magazine – which broke details of Pokemon Black and White – claims that the game will be shown off in its next edition, out June 15th.

This contrasts with information from Dengeki Nintendo DS, which has the announcement down for its May 21st issue. Though the magazine also covers Wii titles, its focus is on handhelds, which would seem a strong hint that we’re looking at another portable Pokemon.

Some may be surprised that either magazine might have the exclusive details of a new Pokemon game, given the timing of Nintendo’s E3 conference on June 6th. But, historically Pokemon has rarely played a major role in the company’s press briefings – perhaps partly because the games usually arrive in Japan well before their western releases.

Besides, Nintendo will likely be spending most of its E3 time discussing its forthcoming home console, codenamed Project Cafe, as well as a suite of future releases for 3DS, as it shifts focus towards a core audience rather than the casual market.

We'll bring you more news on this imminent Pokemon announcement as soon as the two magazines can stop fighting over who gets to announce it.
