PopCap's Peggle bouncing over to DS

Prepare for dual screen, coloured peg addiction

Product: Peggle Dual Shot | Developer: Q Entertainment | Publisher: PopCap Games | Genre: Arcade
[Update - for the lowdown on our exclusive and somewhat premature Peggle DS announcement, you might want to read this interview.]

According to PopCap co-founder John Vechey, Peggle could be the company's next Bejeweled. Talking to Pocket Gamer at the Casual Connect conference, currently running in Amsterdam, Vechey reckoned the game has as much, if not more, potential than the current Queen of Casual Gaming.

Indeed, the web and download game, which like pachinko, sees you aiming a ball that drops and bounces off coloured pegs as it falls, has already been released on iPod (successfully in our opinion) and is announced for Xbox Live, too.

And next up will be the DS version, a decision that builds on PopCap's strategy of releasing its games on as many different, yet appropriate, formats as possible.

No details, other than the port's existence, have yet been revealed however.

Ironically though, when released a year ago the game suffered from slow sales, especially on the many casual gaming portals that PopCap partners with. Indeed, Vechey says Peggle only succeeded because PopCap continued to work on it, promoting it on the company's own website. Now Peggle, which has been downloaded over ten million times, is outselling Bejeweled.

And we wouldn't be surprised if a mobile version is in the works, either.

Lududicrously good fun. My thoughts are that this would look best on a big PSP screen, though.
