John Carmack's known for his high-end PC shooters, but it seem the uber-programmer is now looking for different challenges. So following on from his turn-based firstperson role-playing mobile slasher Orcs & Elves (pictured here), he's now planning to extend the series to DS – at least according to Wired GameLife blogger Chris Kohler.

In a recent interview, Carmack is reported as saying; "We're hoping to do a DS game version of Orcs & Elves, moving over and enhancing the cellphone game on there, which would be our first real direct entry back into the Nintendo world."

There's no news though as to whether the turn-based nature of the game would be upgraded to real-time. As proved by Metroid Prime Hunters, the DS can technically handle fast-moving 3D firstperson games, but it's not the most natural genre for the console.

A DS version would also have to build on the five hours of gameplay of the mobile version, which is still to be released in Europe.

As for the basic premise, you're a young elf out to battle your way through a Dwarf city. Blessed with a talking, magical wand as well as the option to buy extra weapons from a friendly dragon, it's quite different in tone from the run-and-gun games Carmack's previously been associated with.

There's no mention of whether Orcs & Elves' mobile EA publisher will be taking up similar duties for the DS, but as the game doesn't even seem to be in development yet, don't expect to see it in shops until winter at the very earliest.
