It worked on mobile phones (really) and now Orcs & Elves, id Software's fantasy role-playing game, is heading to DS (as we predicted back in January).

Of course, the change in platform (and price) means the turn-based first-person template will get an upgrade, with better graphics promised, as well as more levels, monsters and items. But you'll still be fighting your way through a massive Dwarven kingdom strewn with ancient treasures and riddled with fierce enemies.

As for the mobile sequel, Orcs & Elves II, it will continue on from the original plot, as you break out from the dungeons and explore more of the fantasy realm, which has come on bad times following the fall of King Brahm at Mount Zharrkarag.

You play as a novice thief, who has stolen a legendary talking wand. Together, thief, talking wand and new companion, a mouse (Could this get any more barmy? – Ed) have to return to your besieged home town, all before Steven Segal jumps out of a birthday cake and sinks a submarine.

Okay, we made that last bit up. In reality you have to quest through seven huge interactive environments, including towns, collapsing caverns and haunted forests, and eventually save the day.

Both the DS version of Orcs & Elves and the mobile Orcs & Elves II are due to be released during the autumn.
