While it's too early to say for sure, 3D could well be to handheld gaming in 2010 what touchscreen was in 2008/9 – a prerequisite property for want of which Sony's portable consumer electronics look ridiculous.

Earlier this week we reported that auteur developer Suda51 – maker of No More Heroes and Flower, Sun and Rain – is interested in creating games for the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS, and now industry veteran David Braben is saying much the same thing.

Speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine, Braben – whose credits include the sublime Frontier and well-liked WiiWare title LostWinds (pictured) – has signalled his interest in making a fancy glasses-less-3D game.

"The great thing about 3DS as I understand it,” he says, “is that it uses lenticular technology I first saw at Cambridge University in the early 1990s which doesn't need glasses or anything special.”

Braben goes on to explain how the technology works - “The screen is designed to send a slightly different image to each eye using microscopic triangular lenses on top of each pair of pixels” - before putting his figurative cards on the table: "Obviously the new machine is something that Frontier (Braben's studio) will look at seriously from the point of view of supporting it."

It's looking increasingly as though Nintendo's new console is something to get excited about. We'll know how excited soon, after Nintendo reveals the device officially at E3 in June.
