Nintendo has issued a short press release which says the gaming giant will launch a device called the Nintendo 3DS in Japan before March 2011.

Designed as a successor to the current Nintendo DS series, The 3DS (noted by Nintendo as a temporary name) will play games that "can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses."

It will also be backwards compatible with Nintendo DS software, and the press release states that games for Nintendo DSi "can also be enjoyed."

A motion-tracking 3D DSi game has already been released in Japan. Rittai Kakushi e Attakoreda is an object-hunting title in which you tilt the screen this way and that to look behind things. It looks stunning, though gamers have reported that the motion-tracking is fussy in terms of lighting conditions, which is perhaps what has prompted Nintendo to refine the camera technology in a new console.

Full details on the 3DS will be revealed at this year's mega game convention E3, which is scheduled for June 15th in Los Angeles.
