Godzilla: Unleashed on DS and PSP

New fighting game to stomp its way on to handhelds

Godzilla: Unleashed on DS and PSP

Why do giant monsters inevitably end up fighting each other within the relatively claustrophobic confinement of cities?

Sorry, it's not a joke, just a question.

And if you're looking for the answer, you won't find it in Godzilla: Unleashed because, here too, the oversized green lizard and a host of similarly renowned monsters spend their entire time pounding each other into oblivion while tiny terrified urbanites run for cover from falling chunks of skyscraper as fast as their minute legs will carry them.

In other words, players are expected to claw, kick, stomp, throw and blast their way through the streets of major world cities using a redesigned combat system, with a view to claim the coveted title of King of the Monsters.

The thing is, Atari is also saying gamers are 'challenged to ultimately save the planet from mayhem and destruction', before going on to mention that each three-dimensional cityscape is interactive and features destructible buildings to enable individuals to 'wreak their own brand of spectacular urban devastation'.

To be clear, then, you aim to prevent destruction by causing destruction. We can only imagine George W. Bush has already placed a pre-order with his local game store.

Still, perhaps all will become clear as you play through the game's narrative, which features multiple paths and therefore promises to unfold depending on your choices within battles.

As yet there's been no word as to how the DS and PSP versions may differ with regards to each handheld's specific abilities.

We'll hopefully find out before the autumn, which is when Godzilla: Unleashed is due to emerge from the dark depths of development.
