Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings DS confirmed for Europe

Here in Europe, we're used to having to wait for our games – especially those of the text-heavy, Japanese-developed variety, the category into which Square Enix' Final Fantasy series most definitely falls into.

Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings was released for DS in Japan in May of this year but, as we speculated prior to that, it was always unlikely we'd see it here earlier than 2008.

And it turns out we were right. Square announced the news earlier today – not that we were right, you understand, but that the game is scheduled for an early 2008 release across all PAL territories. Good news for fans eager to get their hands on the DS exclusive Final Fantasy XII sequel.

Check out our comprehensive hands-on with the game here.

Revenant Wings is set one year after the events of Final Fantasy XII (a PS2-only game), and follows a new adventure with heroes Vaan, Penelo, Fran and Balthier. While that game's Gambit battling system remains, the DS features unique touchscreen controls and, apparently, more summons than any other Final Fantasy title, while still remaining more accessible and streamlined than the PS2 game.

"I am delighted that we are providing fans with another opportunity to enjoy the beautiful world of Ivalice with Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings," said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix.

"With the same high-production values including movies and music, this is a stunning sequel that expands upon the original game and that makes full use of the Nintendo DS hardware."
