2013 is shaping up to be an up and down sort of year for Disney Interactive, the gaming branch of the entertainment goliath.

The year began with a bang for the Mouse when it announced the cross-platform, figure-based Disney Infinity project but the bang quickly turned to a whimper when Disney shuttered LucasArts.

Now it appears Disney Interactive has another card (or at least another game) to play this summer - Disney’s Planes will come to the 3DS, DS, Wii, and Wii-U.

Off we go

Disney's Planes is a spinoff of the Cars franchise and, as the title suggests, features talking, anthropomorphized planes as the main characters.

In the game version of Disney’s Planes, players will be able to fly as one of six characters from the movie in three different play modes: Story, Challenge, and Balloon Popping Fun.

Although it will be a single-player affair, the handheld version of Disney’s Planes will offer 40 challenges and missions spread across six cinematic game worlds.

Disney’s Planes (the game) will launch on August 6, with the film following shortly after.
