Nintendo has declined to comment on a report by Japanese newspaper Nikkei which has detailed a new, redesigned DS supposedly due for release in Japan later this year. "We are always developing new products. However, since nothing has been announced officially, we are unable to comment at this time," the company told Famitsu (which was subsequently translated by Kotaku).

According to the newspaper (as we reported yesterday), the new DS will have larger screens, improved wi-fi capabilities, a built-in camera and the ability to play MP3s. This information was later picked up and reported by mega news aggregate site Reuters, adding weight to its authenticity.

It will apparently cost around ¥20,000 (with the current model retails at ¥16,900) and, according to Nikkei, "Nintendo plans to offer several hundred thousand units in Japan before considering overseas sales."

There's hope of official news not too far off though as all eyes are now on an autumn conference Nintendo announced earlier this month, at which it has promised "product news".

The conference will take place in Japan on October 2nd and, seeing as the cat is now out of the bag and isn't likely to go back in again, seems to be the logical place for Nintendo to officially unveil the DS 2 (or whatever it plans to call it).

We will, of course, keep you posted on the latest. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts on what's been rumoured so far, below. Will bigger screens, a camera and the ability to play music entice you to fork out another £100 on an updated DS?
