Ever since the latest DS redesign rumours appeared a couple of weeks ago following Nintendo's announcement that it would unveil "new products" at its October press conference, the internet has been aflutter with speculation of double-touchscreens, bigger displays, and all manner of fancy.

This weekend, things kicked up a gear after technology site NeoGAF released more details, and now it seems confirmation has finally arrived via news aggregator Reuters.

The new DS is coming.

And it's not, it appears, going to have double-touchscreens or a bigger display. Instead, it's going to have a camera, advanced wireless functions, and the ability to play music, introducing it to the arena where the PSP, the iPhone, and the mobile are currently fighting a bloody fight.

It's not like Nintendo to engage competition directly. Instead, the company has always thrived by occupying a niche well and defying competition to enter. However, Apple has arguably attempted to scoop Nintendo from its niche with the iPhone and App Store, so Nintendo's bold move is understandable in that context. Iwata is fighting back.

So far, there are no details available concerning the size of the camera, the method of storage, or anything like that, but the inclusion of music and photography with the new model does pose an immediate question: how will the associated media be stored? And, if by some kind of portable memory, how will Nintendo deal with the consequent threat of piracy?

Still, let's put such thoughts aside for now, and await Nintendo's latest gadget with due levels of excitement and awe.
