Teachers attending this year's Handheld Learning Conference in October will be getting themselves more than just a lesson in how consumer electronics and entertainment software can help children learn.

They'll also be getting a free DS Lite and copy of Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, a freebie which the conference's organisers hope will enable teachers to see the positive impact a games console can have on learning.

Graham Brown, founder of handheld learning told MCV: "Providing teachers with free Nintendo DS Lites is not intended to be a gimmick, we expect our delegates to use them during the conference and experience an environment that would typically not be allowed in a classroom."

Nintendo's business development director Darren Gorton explained Nintendo's decision to support the event saying: "With over 70 million DS units in peoples hands we are genuinely interested in the positive impact that they can have for self-improvement and collaborative learning."

Personally, all we're genuinely interested in is whether it's too late to score an invite to this learning conference. A free DS and game is better than the usual t-shirt and mug we get given at the average games press day after all...
