The highly dangerous substance known as Bejeweled 3 will be distributed by PopCap dealers onto the Nintendo DS in the fourth quarter of the year.

Bejeweled 3 doesn’t reinvent the hard-to-stop match-three formula of its forebears, but does add a series of new modes and some soothing ambient music that I ended up humming uncontrollably.

PopCap hasn’t confirmed which modes will make their way across from the PC original, but we’d expect most - if not all - of them to make an appearance.

Should that prove the case, you'll be cursing the ‘cards’ on Poker, digging for treasure against the rising dirt on Diamond Mine, and bashing butterflies in - well - Butterflies among others.

Jewel in the smartphone crown

For all our loyal Android, Windows Phone, bada, and iOS readers, there’s still no word from PopCap on when it will be releasing Bejeweled 3 on smartphones, despite the previous title being arguably one of the cornerstones of mobile gaming.

When speaking to PopCap back in Feburary, the company told me cryptically to play the PC version to find out why.

Alas, this just led to a memory blackout between the dates of February and May. All I can remember is brightly coloured gemstones and quaint hand-drawn backgrounds.

Bejeweled 3 will, though, be heading to the DS at the end of the year.
