It's the super-human potion versus mushrooms and speed-pills

Asterix lines up at the DS Olympics against Mario and Sonic

We're already wondering just how the London Olympics can attract the same quality of gaming characters as Beijing? Sega and Nintendo have come together to offer us Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, and now Atari is tying into the live-action feature film version of Asterix at the Olympic Games – based on the 1968 comic book – to offer us another DS Olympic experience.

The original Asterix story was a parody of the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport – little has changed there, then – as Asterix wins a place in the Olympics by use of his 'magic potion', but, unsurprisingly, then discovers its use is banned.

Yet rather than hiding behind a masking agent or blaming a positive test on too much nookie the night before, those cunning Gauls release a doctored (literally) version of the potion to the cheating Romans instead. It turns their tongues blue and they're all disqualified, enabling Asterix to win under his own steam.

Quite how this will be rejigged into game form is open to question.

All Atari is currently saying about the game (which as well as DS, will be released on PS2, Wii and PC) is that you'll be able to play as the characters of Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix in a series of "wild adventures and challenges".

In addition to this single-player mode, there is also a two-player option, while a host of mini-games offer "even more hilarious fun".

Asterix at the Olympic Games is currently not confirmed for the UK but is due for release in the rest of Europe this winter.
