The latest news in the recent DS redesign debacle is... that there's still no official news.

Nintendo UK has spoken to CVG.co.uk following published details in Japan of a new larger-screened, MP3 playing DS, saying: "Nintendo has made no such announcement and will not comment on rumour and speculation."

This follows a similar statement from Nintendo of Japan to Famitsu, which said: "We are always developing new products. However, since nothing has been announced officially, we are unable to comment at this time."

Japanese newspaper Nikkei ran a story over the weekend claiming the redesigned DS would be released this year in Japan and will feature larger screens, MP3 compatibility, a built-in camera and improved wi-fi capabilities.

Most of the industry seems convinced this is genuine news and not just more idle rumours of the sort we've been hearing throughout most of this year.

Hopefully the next few days will tell as Nintendo has a press conference planned in Japan on October 2nd which seems to be the likely place at which to officially unveil the DS 2.
