Is Nintendo about to announce a DS redesign?

Breaking news. Nintendo is holding a press conference this October, at which the company will be revealing "new products."

We don't know what kind of products. Nobody does. But we do know that the much-rumoured DS redesign, were it to exist, would technically be a product, and therefore that Nintendo may be on the brink of lifting the lid on the new DS. At least, that's what the internet is speculating.

The hypothetical object at the centre of all this speculation has existed in the blogosphere's imagination since 2006, but the rumours have passed through two E3s without coming true. These rumours generally centre around larger screens, bigger buttons, and in the latest instance double touchscreens. Nintendo has denied each of them categorically.

Now, though, there's definitely going to be a DS redesign. There has to be, right Nintendo?

"We are not announcing anything at this time".

DS redesign. Definitely.
