After weeks of speculation, Nintendo has finally confirmed the DS Lite is headed to Europe for its summer holidays, announcing a June 23rd release date and a price of £99.99 (or €149.99).

The redesigned machine, which is just two thirds the size of its cousin and features a brighter screen and more comfortable buttons and stylus, will be available in black and white colour schemes, enabling it to perfectly complement or compete with both PSP and iPod.

So does this mean the end for its chunky grey sibling? Not according to Nintendo, which maintains both systems will be sold side by side, with the new DS Lite offering a 'premium' alternative to the original handheld which has so far sold over four million units across Europe (16 million worldwide).

We'll be bringing you a full review of the new compact console just as soon as we can remember where we put it.
