Like the long-running negotiations between China, the US and the 'I'm so Ronery' dictatorship of North Korea, the process of commercially releasing the DS version of Mutual Assured Destruction simulator DEFCON has been a fraught one.

The existence of a portable version of DEFCON was originally announced a Pocket Gamer scoop back in the summer of 2007, before the DS incarnation was listed as a retail release in the summer of 2008.

A couple of days later, however, that listing was pulled, with the publisher Pinnacle saying "we are some way off having any DS finished product".

Then Pinnacle went boom (bust).

Now, though, developer Introversion has announced it has regained all the rights from Pinnacle and, with the game finished, is looking for a publisher to launch DEFCON DS - presumably from a fleet of ballistic missile submarines somewhere in the Northern Atlantic.

Personally, we think it would make an excellent DSiWare game, always assuming it could be squeezed into a sufficiently small amount of memory.

However Introversion hopefully suggests the game will appear on the shelves worldwide in autumn 2009.
