Crytek CEO states company has no plans to develop games for PS Vita

With Sony's E3 presentation literally hours away, the PS Vita received a bit of bad news courtesy of Crytek's CEO Cevat Yerli.

Speaking to the German site Golem, Yerli reveals that the company behind Crysis, Far Cry, and the CryEngine will not be developing any games for the PS Vita or the yet-to-be-released Wii U, citing a lack of interest among consumers as the main reason for this decision.

While Yerli admits that the Vita is an "appealing" system from a technical standpoint, he expresses doubts over its long-term appeal among the game-playing public.

"From a business perspective, it [the Vita] has arrived slightly too late. It is difficult to see a market with a critical mass of players."

Despite Yerli declaring that Crytek itself has no interest in designing and producing games for the Vita, he does confirm that CryEngine licensees are more than welcome to employ its CryEngine tech in building games for Sony's portable powerhouse.

The times they are a-changin'

In the same interview with Golem, Yerli actually predicts that the next generation of consoles "will be the last one". In his opinion, "tablet PCs are taking over the market and changing the gaming lifestyle... the next generation of consoles will come under massive pressure from smartphones, tablets, and browser games."

Whether or not Yerli is correct in his prognostication of the gaming scene remains to be seen, but what definitely won't be seen is a Crytek-developed game for the PS Vita.
