Apple classic Crystal Quest coming to iPhone

The Mac's best kept secret?

Apple classic Crystal Quest coming to iPhone

Undoubtedly lots of people played games on their Apple Macintosh, but if we err on the critical side, it didn't really hold a light to the Commodore Amiga or Atari ST (at least, not in the UK). Which is probably why Crystal Quest has lived its 20 year life in relative obscurity, despite winning awards and being the first Apple Mac game that was actually in colour.

Well, the secret's out now, as the iPhone follows Xbox Live and mobile in offering an updated adaptation of the Mac's collect-'em-up arcade game. You pilot your ball-bearing ship around the screen gathering up crystals while avoiding Nasties who spawn from portals on either side of the screen. Shooting them down or blasting them with a smart bomb adds a kind of Asteroids/Robotron/Geometry Wars feel to the action (oh man – Geometry Wars would be awesome on the iPhone, eh?), though Crystal Quest is still very much its own game.

Hopefully this'll finally reveal the Mac's best kept secret to the pocket gaming world, so bash the 'Buy It!' button to swing by the App Store and check it out.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
